Four year old colt for Carla Gaines made start #4 in quest of his diploma in Friday’s opener and didn’t have much luck in the stretch run. Off at 9/2 when he went in the gate, yet 2/1 on the far turn, he broke well under J.J. and was just two lengths off the pace in this Cal bred maiden special weight event for 3 and up at ¾ on the turf. Turning for home J.J. had him on the fence and he decided to stay there hoping for a seam to open up, which never developed until very late. He checked at the 1/8 pole, just enough to lose his momentum, and was beaten two at the wire by his stable mate who chose to go outside at the top of the lane. He finished third nosed out of second by a long shot. If J.J. could have gotten him to the outside turning for home, he wins the race. He’s a soon winner on the turf going short or long. And when management tells you they are shutting off computer assisted wagering two minutes to post, they are lying to you like a politician in front of a podium. There is no way this colt goes from 9/2 to 2/1 in less than a minute from wagers that the average folks make on this race.
