Champagne Camie: Sadler’s Mare Dominates Starter Allowance Field by 12 Lengths; Plays Perfect Hand in Equine Poker

Six year old mare for John Sadler was in for a starter allowance race of $16,000 on Friday with an optional claiming price of $20,000. Sent off as the 3/5 choice in a field of just five due to two late scratches, this mare was in for the tag yet fully qualified to be protected if they desired. Breaking from the rail in this six furlong sprint on the main, which had produced just 6% winners, she certainly looked like a vulnerable favorite. But she broke running under Ayuso, got the lead by the half mile pole, stretched it to three by the 3/8 pole, 8 by the 1/8 pole, and then hand ridden the final furlong to win by 12. The time was slow for the six furlongs, 1:12.16, and she ran the final ¼ in a dawdling 26.14, but she still beat a decent field by 12 and was wrapped up late. The track was rated fast after two days of rain, but it was probably more like “good” at this point in the card. To my surprise, there were no claims and she was coming off a win for $16,000. Sadler played a pretty good game of equine poker with this one.
