Atia: McCarthy’s Filly Explodes Late for Maiden Victory; Stakes Potential Evident for Rising Turf Star Upcoming Race: Santa Anita May 18, 2025

Three year old filly for Mike McCarthy made start #2 on Friday in a maiden claimer for $80,000 for soph fillies at a mile on the turf. Off at 8/1 under J.J., she broke OK from the rail slot, then was covered up into the clubhouse turn and sat five lengths off the leaders in mid pack in this field of 10. J.J. kept her on the fence down the back side, swung out for room at the top of the lane, and once she did that, she rolled late and cruised by the leaders to win going away by a length and a half. Her gallop out past the wire was super impressive. This was her 1st time going two turns and this daughter of City of Light has that quick turn of foot you like to see in grass route races. They paid $110,000 for her at a two year old sale and she might be stakes quality before this year is over. She’s in good hands with McCarthy.
